Switching To Natural Deodorant

Over the last several years I have seen a huge shift in how the beauty industry (and even food industry) sells consumers products. Although there are still many brands and products that we are not sure what exactly is in them, or we may question the ingredients used, there are some brands that are much more transparent and real about their products than ever before in this industry. I am not always the best at checking what is in the products I use on my skin & face, but I did keep hearing about natural deodorant and wondered if it would be worth the swap.

Last Summer I had heard a bunch of hype from other blogger friends about native, but who really made me think about trying it was my mom and my friend Jaclyn! My mom has always lived a really healthy lifestyle compared to probably most people, but in the last few years she has really focused a lot on what goes in her body and on her skin. And she was one of the first people I have ever known to swap to a natural deodorant or even one of the first people I have ver heard talk about it! Shortly after, my best friend Jaclyn started talking about NATIVE and told me she was trying to use only deodorant that didn’t have any parabens in it.

According to the National Cancer Society, “Some research has focused on parabens, which are preservatives used in some deodorants and antiperspirants that have been shown to mimic the activity of estrogen in the body's cells. It has been reported that parabens are found in breast tumors, but there is no evidence that they cause breast cancer.” So if this was important for the two people in my life who are probably the healthiest and most in tune with their bodies than anyone I know, I thought I would try to also make the switch, trusting their opinions.

I know myself, and I know that realistically I am NOT going to purge all my beauty and skincare products and toss everything with a paraben in it. There are products I love and swear by, and to be honest I love my makeup routine a lot, so it is hard to think about cutting these harmful additives out 100%. But I thought swapping to a natural, paraben free deodorant would be a great way to start to add in better products to my daily routine.

GET YOUR YEAR OFF TO A FRESH START

MY FAVE SCENT? COCONUT & VANILLA

I switched to NATIVE deodorant in November and have been trying to use only this product every day since! My body has started to adjust and about 80% of the time I feel like it’s working perfectly. When I start to sweat from nerves or I’m really hot, I do smell a little bit! That’s normal because the toxins in your body from the other deodorant products I’ve used for 25 years haha are built up and will take time to clear out. I am going to try a armpit detox next week and see if that helps get rid of any sweat smell and reside from old products that are maybe left in my armpit pores!

I hope that this Q & A helps you decide if you want to swap too, and answers some of the most frequently asked questions I get daily about the process of swapping to natural deodorant. All opinions and words are my own; this is not sponsored or endorsed by Native in any way. I just really wanted to get everything in one place to make it super easy for you to sho the product and learn more about why I swapped and my journey!

QUESTION & ANSWER

DOES YOUR BODY FEEL ANY DIFFERENt
after using native for several months?

To answer in short, no, my body does not feel any different. My longer response to this questions is: I am not sure it is a product that is supposed to make me feel any different; like cutting out sugar or dairy from a diet might. I think the main point of swapping to a natural deodorant is that it is cutting out those harmful additives that can, overtime, possibly cause issues within your body (studies have shown estrogen and hormonal levels can be very off balanced when the body is heavy in parabens).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SCENT?

I personally love the Coconut & Vanilla because it is subtle and sweet! If you are looking for a more fresh scent, also really like the mint and cucumber scents.

DOES IT STOP YOU FROM SWEATING?

Not at all! Normal deodorant is not an antiperspirant, therefore it doesn’t protect or stop you from sweating. Especially since it is a product made from natural ingredients, there isn’t anything in it that would stop you from sweating. Taken from the Native website, it is better explained here, “Anti-perspirant prevents you from sweating. That is, the aluminum contained in anti-perspirant acts as a plug on your body’s sweat ducts and prevents you from sweating and releasing other byproducts of sweat. Deodorant works by eliminating and absorbing the moisture and odors associated with sweat.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR YOUR
BODY TO ADJUST TO THE PRODUCT?

To be honest, I am three months in and I think my body is still adjusting. I have to imagine that using deodorant for 25 years that has parabens and other ingredients that either stop sweat, plug my pores, or have artificial scents and coloring, that my body will have to take time to adjust. It is common for a lot of people to be able to successfully swap right away, however for me it is taking some time.

WHAT IS THIS ARMPIT DETOX PEOPLE
ARE TALKING ABOUT?

This is a great blog post that I read and have found to be helpful. I plan on trying out this detox and doing it every week or so, just to kickstart my pores being cleaned out and hopefully this will help the natural deodorant work even better!
