Transitioning To Solid Foods

Starting solids

I think I’ve mentioned this a few times, especially if you follow me on Instagram, but Taya was born with a soft esophagus and so she makes a lot of throat noise - which in turn had led me to take a slower approach with starting solid foods than some. We started feeding her ‘real’ food haha for lack of a better term, you know what I mean, around five months old. We first started introducing her to veggie and fruit purée pouches and she actually took to them really well (and still enjoys them). We also currently do a lot of steamed veggies mashed up or in small pieces, applesauce, bananas, sweet potato, avocado, etc. We don’t really feed her meat for no other reason than we have tried and she has a hard time knowing how to chew it & ends up just gagging on it every time hah love her. So safe to say.. if feeding your baby solids makes you nervous or anxious you are definitely not alone. Honestly it still makes me anxious when I let her eat on her own because she does make so much throat noise and coughs a lot. I know that the feeling of eating solid food is an experience that is new to babies when they first start eating food and so it does take them a little bit of time to learn textures and how to chew, especially when they only have two teeth LOL.

I am definitely not here to tell you how to introduce solids to your baby, or which way of feeding food to them is best, because I really think that depends on the parent & the baby completely. I do see a lot of babies who eat differently than Taya or maybe eat more foods or different types of foods that she doesn’t eat. But like I said each baby is unique and as long as your baby is developing and growing and looks good in their charts as far as their nutrition, then you should be confident in what you decide to do.

These are just a few things that we use in a daily rotation for Taya. I think it helped me feel prepared to feed her food when we had just a few things to use. We use these little silicone bowls a lot - just mashing up veggies or fruit or cutting up little pieces, & because they stick to her high chair she can’t throw it haha. And also makes it really easy to clean and is nonstick. The spoons are the perfect size for her mouth, we actually ordered a few a while ago that were way too big and wide and I felt like she wasn’t able to get big enough scoops of food. But these spoons seem like a great size for her mouth. Although she’s not feeding her self with the spoons, we feed her with them, I feel like because they’re silicone and they don’t hurt her teeth or her mouth as she gets a little bit older she will easily be able to feed herself with them! The bibs also wiped down & are easy to clean. Mom hack: you can also throw them in your dishwasher to get them really nice n’ squeaky! The plate with sections on it will be really helpful as she gets a little bit older & eats more. And of course the silicone toothbrushes because it’s important to start brushing their teeth as soon as they start eating solid foods and I like that these ones easily go on top of your finger and or straightforward and easy to use.
