DIY Tie Dye
let’s get creative
The tie dye trend is taking 2010 by full force haha seems like everywhere you look there are tie dye clothes! I personally love the trend and think it is so fun/colorful and perfect for Spring & Summer. Being asked to stay inside the last two months has given us much more time to be creative with ways to have fun & do '“dates” haha and not go too stir crazy.
I had this idea back in March when we first got quarantined & instantly hunted down some supplies on Amazon. Just a note, a lot of items that would usually be on Amazon Prime are now taking several days to weeks to ship. This is to be expected, with everything going on I know like a lot of other brands they are doing their best to get what os really essential delivered first. So just keep it in mind when you are placing an order that the delivery time might be a little longer. Overall this was super easy, fun, creative and didn’t take that long to complete. Would be such a fun activity with kids in the backyard + date night + zoom activity with friends. Follow the instructions below (they also come with the kit) & you could also pin them to your Pinterest and come back to it later!
Enjoy! Xx
What you will need:
+ Tie Dye kit (this is what I bought) from Amazon
+ White sweatshirts / Any kind will do just keep an eye out for ones that are mostly cotton (they will soak the color up best.) If you can find pre-shrunk and pre-washed that just saves you an extra step so you don’t have to wash before dying!
+ White socks (we used nike) / Shorts / Tees or anything else you might want to tie dye while the colors are out.
NEXT STEPS:
+ The specific kit I bought comes with gloves, rubber bands (I would recommend buying more so you have plenty to do any design you want), a plastic sheet to lay on the ground, all of the powder dyes (you will just add water to them), and instructions/ideas for designs.
+ You will want to add water to each individual bottle of dye to activate the powder into a liquid dye.
+ You can either google different techniques, use the instructions the kit comes with for inspo, or just wing it (hey, that’s what I do lol) to decide where you want to put the rubber bands.
+ After you squirt the dye colors on to the fabric (MUST use gloves for this step or else your hands will be stained)!! Set it on clean garbage bags in your bathtub. It shouldn’t stain the sides but just place on garbage bags in case to protect. Let it sit for 6-8 hours or overnight is fine too.
+ Rinse out all of the pieces with COLD water until the water runs clear as you can get it. We actually just used the bathtub to rinse since the sweatshirts were heavy from the dye/being wet. It worked well but did take a bit of time to make sure all the excess dye was washed out.
+ Wash each piece on it’s own in hot water with a little soap & dry with a hot air full cycle. If you have used similar colors for all of your pieces you can wash together. If some are blue and some are more pink/red, make sure they are washed separate and DO NOT add in other clothes with the tie dye the first wash.
+ They are ready to wear! When washing just throw in the wash with like colors.
